Abstract

Two SC (South Chinese) type radishes, cv. ¢¥Joseang-sasibil¢¥ and ¢¥Beaksu-gungjung¢¥ and one European type radish, cv. ¢¥Comet¢¥ were used for the present experiment to examine the influence of light intensity and the relationship between light intensity and temperature on the growth and flowering of vernalized and non-vernalized plants. The results are summarized as follows:
The SC type cultivars which have been known as seed vernalization type flowered under artificially illuminated long-day conditions (25¡É constant temperature) even without any vernalization treatment. The lowering of the non-vernalized radish was influenced by cultivars and light intensity. However, the flowering of the vernalized cultivars was controlled by proper combinations of photosensitivity and thermosensitivity.
The root growth of two SC type cultivars was inhibited by high light intensity which apparently caused earlier flowering. On the contrary, the root growth of ¢¥Comet¢¥ was accelerated by high light intensity regardless of bolting and flowering.
